The Democrat's Big Lie!

The Big Lie!

The Democrats' war on President Donald Trump is based on a very dangerous lie—that President Trump, the Republican Party, and conservatives are a fascist threat. Fascism is a way of ruling that advocates total control of the people. ... Fascism comes from the Latin fascio, meaning “bundle, or political group.” In fascism, the people are looked at as a bundle — one body that must be controlled by the government with absolute force if necessary. A republican form of government where people (the whole Nation) are many small bubbles that come together to make the whole. How then can Democrats label President Trump who is an avoid Conservative ( strong self-reliability, individual responsibility, small government and few regulations on the individual by government) to a Fascist?
How about Democrats using Nazi? We hear that enough! Nazi: a member of a German political party that controlled Germany from 1933 to 1945 under Adolf Hitler: an evil person who wanted to use power to control and harm other people especially because of their race, religion, etc. Prior to Nazism, Hitler was the head of the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP), the official shortened to the Nazi party. Trump!? A Socialist?
However, Trump is best described as a Nationalist. What is a nationalist leader?
Nationalist leaders lead the American Revolution and in the creation of the United States. The type of leader who leads or guides or inspires others. These Nationalist advocated the principles contained in the Declaration of Independence; national and individual independence and  a strong nation, self. Who are some self-identified Nationalist leaders?
  •         Nelson Mandela (South Africa)
  •        Mahatma Gandhi (India)
  •        Benito Mussolini (Italy)
  •        Fidel Castro (Cuba)
  •        Adolf Hitler (Germany)
  •        Yasser Arafat (Palestine)
  •        Donald Trump (United States)
  •     Vladimir Putin (Russia)

What an eclectic group! Who among the above were benevolent or evil? Correct!  Some were and some were not.

What is one conclusion we can arrive at? Democrats and the Left Media want you to forget history and identify President Trump with the evil personification of Adolf Hitler and his outrageous beliefs and behavior!

1943 Air Heroism

1943 Air Heroism

I consider it such a remarkable accounting of perseverance, bravery and all out miracle.

This is really incredible as well as outstanding!

B-17 "All American" (414th Squadron, 97BG) Crew:
Pilot- Ken Bragg Jr.
Co-pilot- G. Boyd Jr.
Navigator- Harry C. Nuessle
Bombardier- Ralph Burbridge
Engineer- Joe C. James
Radio Operator- Paul A. Galloway
Ball Turret Gunner- Elton Conda
Waist Gunner- Michael Zuk
Tail Gunner- Sam T. Sarpolus
Ground Crew Chief- Hank Hyland

In 1943 a mid-air collision on February 1, 1943, between a B-17 and a German fighter over the Tunis dock area, became the subject of one of the most famous photographs of WW II.

An enemy fighter attacking a 97th Bomb Group formation went out of control, probably with a wounded pilot, then continued its crashing descent into the rear of the fuselage of a Flying Fortress named "All American", piloted by Lt. Kendrick R. Bragg, of the 414th Bomb Squadron.

When it struck, the fighter broke apart, but left some pieces inside the B-17.

The left horizontal stabilizer of the Fortress and left elevator were completely torn away. The two right engines were out and one on the left had a serious oil pump leak.

The vertical fin and the rudder had been damaged, the fuselage had been cut almost completely through, connected only at two small parts of the frame, and the radios, electrical and oxygen systems were damaged.

There was also a hole in the top that was over 16-feet long and 4 feet wide at its widest; the split in the fuselage went all the way to the top gunner's turret.

Although the tail actually bounced and swayed in the wind and twisted when the plane turned and all the control cables were severed, except one single elevator cable still worked, the aircraft miraculously still flew!

The tail gunner was trapped because there was no floor connecting the tail to the rest of the plane. The waist and tail gunners used parts of the German fighter and their own parachute harnesses in an attempt to keep the tail from ripping off and the two sides of the fuselage from splitting apart.

While the crew was trying to keep the bomber from coming apart, the pilot continued on his bomb run and released his bombs over the target.

When the bomb bay doors were opened, the wind turbulence was so great that it blew one of the waist gunners into the broken tail section. It took several minutes and four crew members to pass him ropes from parachutes and haul him back into the forward part of the plane.

When they tried to do the same for the tail gunner, the tail began flapping so hard that it began to break off. The weight of the gunner was adding some stability to the tail section, so he went back to his position.

The turn back toward England had to be very slow to keep the tail from twisting off. They actually covered almost 70 miles to make the turn home.

The bomber was so badly damaged that it was losing altitude and speed and was soon alone in the sky.

For a brief time, two more Me-109 German fighters attacked the All American.  Despite the extensive damage, all of the machine gunners were able to respond to these attacks and soon drove off the fighters. The two waist gunners stood up with their heads sticking out through the hole in the top of the fuselage to aim and fire their machine guns. The tail gunner had to shoot in short bursts because the recoil was actually causing the plane to turn.

Allied P-51 fighters intercepted the All American as it crossed over the Channel and took one of the pictures shown. They also radioed to the base describing that the appendage was waving like a fish tail and that the plane would not make it and to send out boats to rescue the crew when they bailed out. The fighters stayed with the Fortress, taking hand signals from Lt. Bragg and relaying them to the base. Lt. Bragg signaled that 5 parachutes and the spare had been "used" so five of the crew could not bail out.  He made the decision that if they could not bail out safely, then he would stay with the plane to land it.

Two and a half hours after being hit, the aircraft made its final turn to line up with the runway while it was still over 40 miles away. It descended into an emergency landing and a normal roll-out on its landing gear.

When the ambulance pulled alongside, it was waved off because not a single member of the crew had been injured.

No one could believe that the aircraft could still fly in such a condition.

The Fortress sat placidly until the crew all exited through the door in the fuselage and the tail gunner had climbed down a ladder, at which time the entire rear section of the aircraft collapsed.

This old bird had done its job and brought the entire crew home uninjured.

Date which will live in infamy’ will be commemorated online, across the country

Date which will live in infamy’ will be commemorated online, across the country

The 74th anniversary of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor will be commemorated Monday with ceremonies, a parade and a host of other events from Washington, D.C., to the site of the attack in Hawaii that drew the United States into World War II.

Pearl Harbor Day honors the 2,400 people who died when the Japanese attacked the base in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941, which brought a war being fought largely in Europe to U.S. soil. Flags will be flown at half-staff at government locations to honor those who died, and many homes across the USA will display the American flag.

A ceremony will be held Monday afternoon in Washington at the National World War II Memorial. In Honolulu, the annual Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade will extend a mile through the city Monday evening.

Many of the events of the day from Pearl Harbor can be viewed via livestreaming at pearlharbor events.com. Participants will be able to ask questions about the attack of National Park Service experts.

In addition, the live-stream will show a commemoration of the sinking of the USS Oklahoma, which lost 429 crew, and observe interment in the hull of the USS Arizona of an urn containing the ashes of Joseph Langdell, a former ensign on the ship. The events are sponsored by the park service, the U.S. Navy and the Pacific Historic Parks.

On Tuesday, a dive to the wreck of the Arizona by a Pacific National Monuments cultural resources chief will be broadcast live, and people can ask questions through Facebook.
“We pay tribute to the men, women and children — military and civilian — who lost their lives on Dec. 7, 1941, ... and recognize the sacrifices today’s service members make to carry forward the inextinguishable torch of liberty for generations to come.”

Make sure your children and grandchildren know this and participate!

HALBROOK: What made the Nazi Holocaust possible? Gun control

HALBROOK: What made the Nazi Holocaust possible? Gun control

By Stephen P. Halbrook

We recently marked the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht, or the Night of the Broken Glass, the Nazi pogrom against Germany’s Jews on Nov. 9-10, 1938. Historians have documented most everything about it except what made it so easy to attack the defenseless Jews without fear of resistance. Their guns were registered and thus easily confiscated.

To illustrate, turn the clock back further and focus on just one victim, a renowned German athlete. Alfred Flatow won first place in gymnastics at the 1896 Olympics. In 1932, he dutifully registered three handguns, as required by a decree of the liberal Weimar Republic. The decree also provided that in times of unrest, the guns could be confiscated. The government gullibly neglected to consider that only law-abiding citizens would register, while political extremists and criminals would not. However, it did warn that the gun-registration records must be carefully stored so they would not fall into the hands of extremists.

The ultimate extremist group led by Adolf Hitler seized power just a year later in 1933. The Nazis immediately used the firearms-registration records to identify, disarm and attack “enemies of the state,” a euphemism for Social Democrats and other political opponents of all types. Police conducted search-and-seizure operations for guns and “subversive” literature in Jewish communities and working-class neighborhoods.

Jews were increasingly deprived of more and more rights of citizenship in the coming years. The Gestapo cautioned the police that it would endanger public safety to issue gun permits to Jews. Hitler faked a show of tolerance for the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, but Flatow refused to attend the reunion there of former champions. He was Jewish and would not endorse the farce.

By fall of 1938, the Nazis were ratcheting up measures to expropriate the assets of Jews. To ensure that they had no means of resistance, the Jews were ordered to surrender their firearms.

Flatow walked into a Berlin police station to comply with the command and was arrested on the spot, as were other Jews standing in line. The arrest report confirmed that his pistols were duly registered, which was obviously how the police knew he had them. While no law prohibited a Jew from owning guns, the report recited the Nazi mantra: “Jews in possession of weapons are a danger to the German people.” Despite his compliance, Flatow was turned over to the Gestapo.

This scenario took place all over Germany — firearms were confiscated from all Jews registered as gun owners. As this was occurring, a wholly irrelevant event provided just the excuse needed to launch a violent attack on the Jewish community: A Polish teenager who was Jewish shot a German diplomat in Paris. The stage was set to instigate Kristallnacht, a carefully orchestrated Nazi onslaught against the entire Jewish community in Germany that horrified the world and even the German public.

Under the pretense of searching for weapons, Jewish homes were vandalized, businesses ransacked and synagogues burned. Jews were terrorized, beaten and killed. Orders were sent to shoot anyone who resisted.

Today, gun control, registration and prohibition are depicted as benign and progressive. Government should register gun owners and ban any guns it wishes, Americans are told, because government is inherently good and trustworthy. The experiences of Hitler’s Germany and, for that matter, Stalin’s Russia and Pol Pot’s Cambodia, are beneath the realm of possibility in exceptional America. Let’s hope so.
Still, be careful what you wish for.

Pondering Hitler's Legacy

Pondering Hitler's Legacy

By George Friedman

Happenstance has brought me today to a house on the Austria-Germany border, just south of Salzburg. That puts me about 3 miles from the German town of Berchtesgaden, on the German side of the border. Adolf Hitler's home, the Berghof, was just outside the town, on a mountain in the Bavarian Alps. To the extent that Hitler had a home, this was it, and it was the place where Hitler met with many notables, particularly before the war began.

As it happens, today is the 76th anniversary of the start of World War II in Europe. It is always a strange feeling to be here. There is a sense of history present here, but it is mostly a sense of the mind, since Berchtesgaden is an attractive but ordinary place. It always feels as if towns like this should have a patina of extraordinariness sticking to everything. But that isn't how history works. There is a patina of mind, but not of place. On Sept. 1 of any year since 1939, and at a place like this, there is a sense of urgency to extract the real meaning of the man who lived in a house on the mountain I am looking at.
After 76 years, it seems appropriate to try to figure out what Hitler and the war he initiated genuinely changed in the world. This is not an easy question, because to arrive at an answer I had to dismiss from my mind the many acts of gratuitous evil that he committed. It is hard to dismiss those, but in a sense they left little legacy to the world except for the realization that civilization is a thin layer over humanity's beastly savagery. But truly, we didn't have to have Hitler to learn that. We humans have always sensed what is beneath our surface.

The question is how the world changed as a result of Hitler's decision to invade Poland.

The Price for Europe
The first outcome, obviously, was that he destroyed Europe's hegemony over much of the world and its influence over the rest. Within 15 years of the end of the war, Britain, France, Belgium and the Netherlands lost their empires. A handful of European nations had dominated the world. By the end of the war they had lost the will, the energy and the wealth to maintain their power. After half-hearted and doomed attempts to resist, these countries willingly participated in the dismantling of what they had once thought of as their birthright.
This changed the shape of the world, of course, but the change was less the result of the world's resistance to Europe than a result of Europe's exhaustion. After the war, Europe faced the task of rebuilding buildings. The ambition to rule had been exhausted. However flawed or wicked that ambition might have been, there is still something sad in the loss of all ambition, beyond the desire for comfort. The will to dominate, seen in its most extreme form in Hitler's appetites, chills the blood. The loss of any transcendent ambition merely cools it. Europe has lost its recklessness, which is on the whole good. Yet it has gained an excessive caution that makes it difficult for Europe to make up its mind over matters small and large.

The world is certainly a better place without Hitler's reckless imprudence. It is probably a better place without British or French imperialism, although when we look at what they left behind, we wonder if the wreckage of empire is worth the wreckage of the post-imperial world, whoever we blame for that wreckage.

Hitler clearly didn't want this outcome. I think he was sincere when he said that he would leave the British Empire intact, along with its navy, if the United Kingdom accepted German domination of the European mainland. He wanted peace with the British so he could crush the Soviets. But the British as a nation could accept that deal only if they trusted Hitler's promise. However sincere he was in 1940, Britain couldn't bet on the endurance of his word. As a result, Hitler in due course committed suicide in Berlin, and Britain presided over the dissolution of its own empire — the only thing that would have disgusted both Churchill and Hitler. Churchill's imperialism and Hitler's racism met on that point.

There was another thing Hitler cost Europe: the metaphysical sensibility. It is startling, the extent to which Christian Europe has abandoned Christianity for secularism. Consider this map:

The decline of church attendance is the outer husk of a European sensibility that, at the highest levels of thought, contemplated the deeper meanings of things. It was not Hitler who destroyed the European metaphysical sensibility. In many ways it destroyed itself from the inside, with a radical skepticism derived from the Enlightenment that turned on itself. But Hitler provided a coup de grace to that sensibility by appropriating figures like Friedrich Nietzsche and Richard Wagner to his own political ends, thereby delegitimizing not only them but also the tradition from which they emerged. Hitler, in his own strange wanderings in the depths, made such wanderings no longer respectable, and indeed, suspect. There is a saying I once heard: "German philosophers go down deeper, stay down longer and come up dirtier than any others." I don't know about philosophers, but Hitler, the would-be philosopher, certainly did, and it cost Europe the jewel of its intellectual heritage.
It is said that Napoleon called the English a nation of shopkeepers. He obviously meant that as an insult, seeing shopkeepers as people of limited imagination, ambition and wit. There is some truth to the saying about the English, although George Orwell was enraged at the trivialization of their achievements. To the extent to which the English were suspicious of the wholesomeness and usefulness of French and particularly German philosophy, Napoleon was right. But if he was, then Hitler achieved something extraordinary: He made all of Europe into nations of shopkeepers.

After the war, the obsession of Europeans was to live. Then it was to make a living. Napoleon's insult was that there was more to life than simply making a living. What Hitler achieved was what he would have been appalled by: shopkeepers ruling Europe. But Europe is obsessed with making a living and suspicious of profound thinking. It has seen where that got it and it doesn't intend to go there again. The best minds get MBAs. The broad public sleeps late on Sunday. The train wreck that Hitler made of Europe created a secularism not only in relation to Christianity, but in all attempts to recreate the depth of European culture.

The Power of the United States

Of course in all of this, perhaps the most important thing that Hitler did was unleash the United States, a country where earning a living is the definition of life. Hitler believed that his defeat meant the triumph of Bolshevism. It really meant the triumph of the United States and its culture, which it distributed in Western Europe through occupation and in the Soviet bloc through imitation.

The United States redefined European culture. As I have written in Flashpoints: The Emerging Crisis in Europe, it was not Coca-Cola but the computer that was the carrier of American culture. The computer had nothing to do with metaphysics or with the true or beautiful. It had to do with the narrowest form of instrumental reason: It simply got things done, and in doing so, it justified its existence. The computer dominated the world — and Europe — and with it came a mode of thinking, contained in programming, that was so radically different from what European culture consisted of as to almost be from another planet. Of course, Europeans helped found the culture, but they bequeathed it to their heir, the United States. Paradoxically, the United States remains the most religious of countries, with church attendance at its height. Religiosity and instrumental reason are compatible in the United States — a point to ponder.

Hitler respected Josef Stalin. He understood the radical ideologue who was ready to kill. He had little respect for the United States. He understood Stalin, but he couldn't fathom Roosevelt. But as I sit here looking toward Berchtesgaden, I must recall that it was the 7th Infantry Regiment of the Third Division, U.S. Army, that captured the town and Hitler's home. The Americans occupied the area until 1995, using it for military purposes. This was the most important thing Hitler achieved, and the last thing he expected. Hitler drew the Americans into the heart of Europe and left the Europeans completely vulnerable to the emerging, and quite strange, modes of thought that a nation that holds shopkeepers in great regard can produce. Hitler destroyed the dams that Europe had built around itself. He crippled all of Europe, including the Soviet Union. He could not imagine the need to cripple the Americans, nor could he have had realized the need. And therefore, in the end, they rebuilt Berchtesgaden and I am sitting here looking at it.

Hitler will be remembered not only for great evil but also — and more important, in many ways — for the manner in which almost all of the consequences of his war were unexpected.

THE NEW FASCISM

THE NEW FASCISM
From 'gay rights' to 'global warming,' totalitarianism is rapidly rising

Newt Gingrich called it an "open, blatant example of the new fascism," Charles Krauthammer called it "totalitarian," Pat Buchanan labeled it "the new blacklist" and RedState headlined it as "a fascist purge."
And it wasn't just conservatives sounding the alarm. Leftist comedian Bill Maher called the perpetrators the "gay mafia," and even well-known "gay" media personalities condemned it, Andrew Sullivan saying it "disgusts me" and radio talker Tammy Bruce calling out the "gay gestapo."

They were referring, of course, to the forced resignation of tech prodigy Brendan Eich as CEO of the company he co-founded, Mozilla, developer of the popular Firefox Web browser, all because he had donated $1,000 to California's Proposition 8 upholding traditional marriage.

Everyone knows the Eich story - and almost everyone, it seems, condemns it, as though it were a singularly egregious injustice in today's America.

But, as revealed in the May issue of WND's acclaimed monthly Whistleblower magazine, Brendan Eich, far from being a unique or especially shocking case, is just one of a growing multitude of Americans whose lives and livelihoods are being intentionally crushed by "THE NEW FASCISM."

"What could be stranger,"  comments Whistleblower Editor David Kupelian, on the stunning hypocrisy of today's left, "than witnessing the ongoing 'fundamental transformation' of America at the hands of people claiming to stand for fairness, tolerance, diversity, free speech and the common man - yet who unfailingly end up taking us, kicking and screaming, in the exact opposite direction?"
The most obvious example, of course, is Barack Obama. Having promised to be the most honest, transparent, post-racial and non-ideological president ever, Obama is almost universally regarded as the least honest, least transparent, most racial and most ideological president in history. Likewise, forces of the left - like the college professor who recently called for the imprisonment of global-warming deniers - grow increasingly fanatical in their intolerance of the basic freedoms of Americans who don't share their views.

However, of all the various regions of the left, there is no quarter where free speech and diversity are less tolerated - and more viciously persecuted - than in the powerful, well-funded and pervasive "LGBT" movement.

After reading Whistleblower's "THE NEW FASCISM," readers will understand why even "mainstream" pundits and personalities from both left and right are characterizing what is now happening in America as "totalitarian," "gestapo"-like and "fascist."

Highlights
•  "Welcome to the new fascism" by David Kupelian, on how totalitarian oppression is growing in America - all in the name of "equality" and "tolerance"
•  "Uninstall Firefox" by Dennis Prager, who says 'A totalitarian streak is part of the left's DNA'

•  "The new blacklist" by Patrick J. Buchanan, on how, "In the new dispensation, opposition to same-sex marriage" will cause "the ruin of your career"

•  "Nothing 'new' about the thought police" by Joseph Farah, who explains why unabashed tyranny is now sweeping the land

•  "Fabulous fascism" by Steve Deace, on how "tolerance" has been transformed into "totalitarianism"

•  "What the left did in one week" by Dennis Prager, recounting a stunning wave of assaults in the new civil war

•  "Liberal fascism: Putting global warming skeptics in jail" by Jim Lakely

•  "Concentration of power: Formula for great evil" by Walter E. Williams, who explains what enabled governments to kill millions in the last century - and makes a chilling parallel with Obama's America

•  "Criticize 'gays,' get sued for 'crime against humanity'" by Bob Unruh, on the precedent-setting case were the judge questions whether a pastor's biblical perspective is protected by the First Amendment

•  "Customs and cops pursue 'haters'" by Bob Unruh, on another pro-family leader who is detained, then arrested, for witnessing to truths everyone understood a generation ago

•  "When bullying kids is disguised as 'anti-bullying'" by Linda Harvey, who exposes how supposed "anti-bullying" programs end up bullying, intimidating and indoctrinating children throughout America's public schools

•  "Gay mafia" attacks Focus on the Family movie" by Drew Zahn, on the LGBT intimidation campaign that insists "Americans should not tolerate" a wholesome, positive, pro-family film.

•  "The strange, strange story of 'gay fascism' deniers" by Scott Lively, on the astonishing exposé by a well-known self-described "gay, left-wing" journalist who explains how and why "Gay men have been at the heart of every major fascist movement"

•  "Amazon now urged to blacklist 'haters'" by Bob Unruh, on how the far-left Southern Poverty Law Center is focused on putting conservative and Christian organizations out of business by officially classifying them as "hate groups"

•  "A lawless president and a sleeping Congress" by Andrew Napolitano, in which the former judge shows how Obama's breathtaking violations of the Constitution are met, mostly, with yawns

•  "Unmasking the 'Imperial Presidency'" by Phyllis Schlafly, who maps out specific ways Congress could rein in today's out-of-control Obama dictatorship

•  "Freedom: Fight for it or lose it" by Thomas Sowell, who says: "Officials who want more power are not going to stop unless they get stopped"

In Whistleblower's "THE NEW FASCISM" issue, Rush Limbaugh provides a spine-straightening summary of the left's current slash-and-burn strategy toward Americans with traditional Judeo-Christian values:

"These people - they claim that all this is how they are inclusive and this is how they're promoting diversity - and they're not. They are exclusionary. There's no diversity tolerated here. You've gotta be one way. There is no openness. There is no kindness, there is no compassion, there's no inclusiveness, and there certainly isn't any diversity on the left. It's just a bunch of brownshirts. And if you are not wearing one, you either soon will be, or you're gonna be ruined. There is no dissent. They have no interest in debating anybody. They have no interest in discussing anything. If you disagree with them, you die - figuratively. You're dead. You don't exist."

Adds WND's Kupelian: "It's time for traditionally minded Americans - not only conservatives, Christians, Republicans, libertarians and independents, but also principled Democrats and liberals - to realize that the radical left has declared war on them. This issue of Whistleblower will take you behind the scenes and expose their tactics and strategies, as well as point the way to victory and a restoration of the America our forefathers gave us."

"Within the space of our lifetime," writes Kupelian, "much of what Americans once almost universally abhorred has been packaged, perfumed and gift-wrapped, and sold to us as though it had great value. By skillfully playing on our deeply felt national values of fairness, generosity and tolerance, these marketers have persuaded us to embrace as enlightened and noble that which all previous generations since America's founding regarded as grossly self-destructive - in a word, evil."

Here’s the long, tragic, ugly story of government

Here’s the long, tragic, ugly story of government

by Walter Williams
Engineering Evil” is a documentary recently shown on the Military History channel. It’s a story of Nazi Germany’s murder campaign before and during World War II. According to some estimates, 16 million Jews and other people died at the hands of Nazis.

Though the Holocaust ranks high among the great human tragedies, most people never consider the most important question: How did Adolf Hitler and the Nazis gain the power that they needed to commit such horror? Focusing solely on the evil of the Holocaust won’t get us very far toward the goal of the Jewish slogan “Never Again.”

When Hitler came to power, he inherited decades of political consolidation by Otto von Bismarck and later the Weimar Republic that had weakened the political power of local jurisdictions. Through the Enabling Act (1933), whose formal name was “A Law to Remedy the Distress of People and Reich,” Hitler gained the power to enact laws with neither the involvement nor the approval of the Reichstag, Germany’s parliament. The Enabling Act destroyed any remaining local autonomy. The bottom line is that it was decent Germans who made Hitler’s terror possible – Germans who would have never supported his territorial designs and atrocities.

The 20th century turned out to be mankind’s most barbaric. Roughly 50 million to 60 million people died in international and civil wars. As tragic as that number is, it pales in comparison with the number of people who were killed at the hands of their own government. Recently deceased Rudolph J. Rummel, professor of political science at the University of Hawaii and author of “Death by Government,” estimated that since the beginning of the 20th century, governments have killed 170 million of their own citizens. Top government killers were the Soviet Union, which, between 1917 and 1987, killed 62 million of its own citizens, and the People’s Republic of China, which, between 1949 and 1987, was responsible for the deaths of 35 million to 40 million of its citizens. In a distant third place were the Nazis, who murdered about 16 million Jews, Slavs, Serbs, Czechs, Poles, Ukrainians and others deemed misfits, such as homosexuals and the mentally ill.

We might ask why the 20th century was so barbaric. Surely, there were barbarians during earlier ages. Part of the answer is that during earlier times, there wasn’t the kind of concentration of power that emerged during the 20th century. Had Josef Stalin, Mao Zedong and Hitler been around in earlier times, they could not have engineered the slaughter of tens of millions of people. They wouldn’t have had the authority. There was considerable dispersion of jealously guarded political power in the forms of heads of provincial governments and principalities and nobility and church leaders whose political power within their spheres was often just as strong as the monarch’s.

Professor Rummel explained in the very first sentence of “Death by Government” that “Power kills; absolute Power kills absolutely. ... The more power a government has, the more it can act arbitrarily according to the whims and desires of the elite, and the more it will make war on others and murder its foreign and domestic subjects.” That’s the long, tragic, ugly story of government: the elite’s use of government to dupe and forcibly impose its will on the masses. The masses are always duped by well-intentioned phrases. After all, what German could have been against “A Law to Remedy the Distress of People and Reich”? It’s not just Germans who have fallen prey to wellintentioned phrases. After all, who can be against the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act”?

We Americans ought to keep the fact in mind that Hitler, Stalin and Mao would have had more success in their reign of terror if they had the kind of control and information about their citizens that agencies such as the NSA, the IRS and the ATF have about us. You might ask, “What are you saying, Williams?” Just put it this way: No German who died before 1930 would have believed the Holocaust possible.
