An Open Letter to Republican House

An Open Letter to Republican Members of the U.S. House of Representatives

Written on Friday, January 11, 2013 by
This an open letter to the Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives in opposition to the greatly expanded revision of the assault weapon and high capacity ammunition magazine ban legislation proposed by Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA). This legislation will probably be introduced on January 20, 2013. I urge all legal gun owners to contact your members of Congress to urge them to oppose any “assault weapon” or magazine ban.
Here is a great NRA tool for doing so.
Dear Republican Members of the U.S. House of Representatives:
As a legal owner of firearms and licensed to carry a concealed weapon in Wisconsin , I strongly urge you, as members of the House Republican caucus, to rally your fellow members to oppose any part of any legislation to ban so-called “assault weapons” and “large” ammunition magazines.
As you know, a previous ban on these inanimate objects was in effect from 1994-2004 and had no discernible effect on violent crime. In fact, a study of the ban mandated by Congress found: “At best, the assault weapons ban can have only a limited effect on total gun murders, because the banned weapons and magazines were never involved in more than a modest fraction of all gun murders.”
Tens of millions of Americans choose to own semi-automatic firearms with ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds for the same reason as law enforcement officers: they are effective for self-defense. One never knows how many rounds he or she will need for self- defense or defense of others, or how many criminals may attack. Thus having a firearm that allows its lawful user to discharge multiple shots can often be the difference between life and death. In fact, a number of studies have shown that firearms are used for self-defense hundreds of thousands of times to 2.5 million times annually. This amounts to guns being used 3-5 times more often for self-defense than to commit a crime.

This bill is an infringement on our God given Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms and is, therefore, unconstitutional. This bill should never see the light of day in the House and must never get out of committee. Failure to fully kill this proposed legislation will further put the Constitution and its Bill of Rights in jeopardy. They have already been severely wounded by the Progressive/Liberal elites and ruling class. Please do not play into their hands to politicize recent tragedies caused by mentally deranged persons who just happened to use firearms to cause the carnage. They may have just as well as used improvised explosive devices (IED’s) to commit their crimes.
Banning guns is a knee jerk response that does not even come close to solving this very complex problem. In addition, it plays into the hands of the Globalist that want nothing more than to
disarm the American people. Our arms are the only thing standing in the way of the Progressive/Liberal elite and ruling class imposition of a totalitarian government. If America falls then the entire World will fall under the veil of tyranny. It has been suggested that a large factor that figured into Nazi Germany’s decision not to invade Great Brittan after the fall of Dunkirk was the fact that, at the time, the English populace were well armed.
Passage of this bill or certain parts of it may very well turn lifelong, law abiding citizens into felons. The reason: a very large portion of the guns and ammo magazines the common gun owner has would fall into the banned category. Many would not be inclined to give them up very easily.
Rather than expanding previously failed legislation that won’t curb violence, but will affect law- abiding gun owners, I urge you to support legislation to enhance school security and improve our nation’s ailing mental health system.
The real solution to gun violence as seen in Newtown, CT is reform of the mental health system so that the criminally insane are more closely monitored; devising methods to identify and monitor potential mass murders before they murder; restrict the media from sensationalizing tragedies such as the Colorado movie massacre and Newtown; and ban violent first person video games where the player is killing and maiming. Please introduce legislation to deal with the above issues before any gun control legislation is considered.
However, implementing such measures will take some time. In the meantime and until such measures take effect and significantly decreases the risk of future mass killings, it will be important to provide adequate and effective security for our schools. Despite the clamoring of the politically correct Progressive/Liberals, the immediate solution that Wayne LaPierre of the NRA made in his press conference regarding the murders at the Sandy Hook elementary school may very well be necessary. I agree entirely with LaPierre who told us that the best way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Regardless of how this is implemented, whether by placing armed police, private security officers, allowing some school staff to carry at school, etc., this will very well be necessary for a time.

Currently, federal law creates the ironically called, “School Gun Free Zone.” THIS LAW MUST BE REPEALED! States and local governments must be allowed to decide for themselves how to deal with this issue. The term Gun Free School Zones is ironic in that allows for only the bad guys to have guns in the school. Being gun free communicates to the potential mass killer that he/she will be able to carry out their killing plans without any armed or otherwise resistance. Armed guards protect banks. Do we not believe that the lives of our children are more important than our money?
Hopefully, in the future, as we come to solve the more complex causes of these mass murders and the criminally insane, less lethal ways can be potentially devised to secure our schools and the community at large.

Only a Republican caucus, solidly united, can stop this bill. All of the millions of legal gun owners in the U.S. are counting on you. Please don’t let us down.
