GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS’ PRAYER GUIDE
Pray for our
government officials by name.
I urge, first, that requests, prayers, intersession and thanksgiving be made for everyone—for kings, and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
For there is one God and one mediator between God and men,
the man Christ Jesus…I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer,
without anger or disputing. (1 Timothy 2:1-5; 8)
1. Pray they would know Jesus and walk with Him.
Lord, we lift up to you each one of our elected officials
and appointed officials. We ask for the Holy Spirit to move upon the hearts of
every person serving in our government who doesn’t have a personal relationship
with you, that they would come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
And we also lift up to you all those who know you Lord, and we pray they would
walk with you daily as they govern our nation.
“And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray
for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all
spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the
Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in
the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his
glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy” (Colossians 1:9-11).
“This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved
and to come to a knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:3-4).
2. Pray their families would be strengthened.
Heavenly Father, we lift up to you every government
representative and their family. We pray for protection against any division or
strife that might seek to divide families as government leaders spend time away
from their homes to serve in Washington D.C. We pray for marriages to be
strengthened and children to be raised in your truth. We pray for your blessing
on their lives.
“But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with
those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children - with
those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts” (Psalm
103:17-18). “For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family
in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches
he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so
that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being
rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s
holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of
Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled
to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:14-19).
3. Pray they would operate under God’s wisdom.
Almighty God, we pray every leader in Washington D.C. would
come to know the true wisdom that comes only from you. Every good and perfect
gift we know is from above. We ask for the hearts of government leaders to be
humbled,
that they would fear you Lord above all and seek you in
prayer and in scripture to know how to handle the important issues of our day.
We thank you for the good gift of human government, for those you have sent to
punish evildoers and to commend those who do good.
“Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the
earth. Serve the LORD with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling” (Psalm
2:10-11). “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously
to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you” (James 1:5). “For
lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers”
(Proverbs 11:14).
