George F. Will: Recent history reveals Obama as real radical  •  BY GEORGE F. WILL

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Four years ago, Barack Obama was America’s Rorschach test upon whom voters could project their disparate yearnings. To govern, however, is to choose, and now his choices have clarified him. He is a conviction politician determined to complete the progressive project of emancipating government from the Founders’ constraining premises, a project Woodrow Wilson embarked on 100 Novembers ago.
As such, Obama has earned what he now receives, the tribute of a serious intellectual exegesis by a distinguished political philosopher. In “I Am the Change: Barack Obama and the Crisis of Liberalism,” Charles Kesler of Claremont McKenna College rightly says Obama is “playing a long, high-stakes game.” Concerning the stakes, Obama practices prudent reticence, not specifying America’s displeasing features that are fundamental. Shortly before the 2008 election, he said only: “We are five days away from fundamentally transforming” America. Progress, as progressives understand it, means advancing away from, up from, something. But from what?
Wilson, FDR and Obama – From the Constitution’s constricting anachronisms. In 1912, Wilson said, “The history of liberty is the history of the limitation of governmental power.” But as Kesler notes, Wilson never said the future of liberty consisted of such limitation. Instead, he said, “every means … by which society may be perfected through the instrumentality of government” should be used so that “individual rights can be fitly adjusted and harmonized with public duties.” Rights “adjusted and harmonized” by government necessarily are defined and apportioned by it. Wilson, the first transformative progressive, called this the “New Freedom.” The old kind was the Founders’ kind — government existing to “secure” natural rights (see the Declaration) that pre-exist government. Wilson thought this had become an impediment to progress. The pedigree of Obama’s thought runs straight to Wilson.
And through the second transformative progressive, Franklin Roosevelt, who counseled against the Founders’ sober practicality and fear of government power: “We are beginning to wipe out the line that divides the practical from the ideal” and are making government “an instrument of unimagined power” for social improvement. The only thing we have to fear is fear of a government of unimagined power: “Government is a relation of give and take.” The “rulers” — FDR’s word — take power from the people, who in turn are given “certain rights.”  This, says Kesler, is “the First Law of Big Government: the more power we give the government, the more rights it will give us.” As Kesler says, the logic of progressivism is: “Since our rights are dependent on government, why shouldn’t we be?” This is the real meaning of Obama’s most characteristic rhetorical trope, his incessant warning that Americans should be terrified of being “on your own.”  [we all recognize O's reprimand of the conservatives of leaving helpless people "on your own"]
Obama, the fourth transformative progressive, had a chief of staff who said “you never want a serious crisis to go to waste.”  Sobriety demanded.  Campaigning in 1964, Lyndon Johnson, the third consequential progressive, exclaimed through a bull horn: “I just want to tell you this — we’re in favor of a lot of things and we’re against mighty few.” He learned this progressive vernacular from his patron, FDR, who envisioned “an unlimited civilization capable of infinite progress.” Poet Archibald MacLeish, FDR’s choice for librarian of Congress, exemplified progressives’ autointoxication: America has “the abundant means” to create “whatever world we have the courage to desire,” and the ability to “take this country down” and “build it again as we please,” to “take our cities apart and put them together,” to lead our “rivers where we please to lead them,” etc.
In 2012, Americans want from government not such flights of fancy but sobriety; not ecstatic evocations of dreamlike tomorrows but a tolerably functioning today; not fantasies about a world without scarcities and therefore without choices among our desires and appetites but a mature understanding of the limits to government’s proper scope and actual competence.

Book: Obama Wanted to Put bin Laden on Trial

A new book says President Barack Obama hoped to put Osama bin Laden on trial, showing the U.S. commitment to due process under law, if the al-Qaida leader had surrendered during a U.S. raid in Pakistan last year.  In ‘‘The Finish,’’ journalist Mark Bowden quotes the president as saying he thought he would be in a strong political position to argue in favor of giving bin Laden the full rights of a criminal defendant if bin Laden went on trial for masterminding the Sept. 11 attacks.  But Bowden, who also wrote ‘‘Black Hawk Down’’ about the 1993 battle in Somalia where two helicopters were downed, killing 18 U.S. soldiers, says Obama expected bin Laden to go down fighting. A team of Navy SEALs raided bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan in May 2011 and killed bin Laden.
The Associated Press purchased a copy of ‘‘The Finish,’’ which is due to come out Oct. 16, a few weeks before the presidential election. The revelation that Obama hoped to capture bin Laden may provide political fodder for Republicans who have criticized the Obama administration for trying to bring terrorists from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and overseas to trials in U.S. courts. ‘‘Frankly, my belief was if we had captured him, that I would be in a pretty strong position, politically, here, to argue that displaying due process and rule of law would be our best weapon against al-Qaida, in preventing him from appearing as a martyr,’’ Obama is quoted saying in an interview with Bowden.  Obama believed that affording terrorists ‘‘the full rights of criminal defendants would showcase America’s commitment to justice for even the worst of the worst,’’ Bowden writes.

“I am commonly opposed to those who modestly assume the rank of champions of liberty, and make a very patriotic noise about the people. It is the stale artifice which has duped the world a thousand times, and yet, though detected, it is still successful. I love liberty as well as anybody. I am proud of it, as the true title of our people to distinction above others; but…I would guard it by making the laws strong enough to protect it.” –Fisher Ames, letter to George Richard Minot, 1789

Priebus: Romney Dominance Excites Base, Energizes Independents

Mitt Romney’s total dominance of President Barack Obama in the Denver debate not only “excites the base” and the volunteers but it also “energized a lot of Independents,” Reince Priebus, chairman of the National Republican Committee, told Newsmax.TV in an exclusive interview. Priebus said Obama’s lackluster performance “showed the president in his true light, uninspiring with no answers, no vision. It showed the president as a guy who’s in love with being president, but he’s not in love with knowing and performing in a way that makes him a great president.  “That’s what Obama’s problem is. He’s in love with being somebody special, but he’s not in love with doing something special and so what you saw was an incredible, shocking performance with both candidates, except for completely opposite reasons.”

ABC: Obama Falsely Claims He Has a Plan to Cut $4 Trillion from the Deficit

I’ve put forward a specific $4 trillion deficit-reduction plan,” President Obama said during his debate with Mitt Romney on Wednesday night. “It’s on a website. You can look at all the numbers, what cuts we make and what revenue we raise.” ABC’s Jon Karl correctly calls Obama’s claim “mostly fiction.” Does President Obama have a plan to cut the deficit by $4 trillion? No. The “$4 trillion plan” he is referring to includes about $1 trillion Congress has already agreed to and $1 trillion in savings from ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which are already ending. This would be Mostly Fiction. The Washington Post’s Glenn Kessler has also noted Obama’s claim is “simply not accurate,” and pointed out that “virtually no serious budget analyst agreed” with the administration’s accounting.

Pelosi: Benghazi is the fault of the Republicans by Mark Horne

Three days before the deadly assault on the United States consulate in Libya, a local security official says he met with American diplomats in the city and warned them about deteriorating security.
Democrat Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi took it a step farther on CNN. When talking to Wolf Blitzer, she said killings were the fault of House Republicans: “It’s also important to note that the Republican appropriation Congress gave the administration $300 million less than it asked for the State Department, including funding for security.” This insane accusation cannot stand any kind of objective scrutiny. Administrations routinely “high-ball” their requests so that Congress can come in lower and still given them money. There is no evidence that Pelosi’s alleged missing millions prevented security from being beefed up—nor has anyone ventured such an accusation until Pelosi made it up on CNN. Security was not increased because someone decided not to increase it. Only Romney gets punished for speaking; Pelosi gets a free ride.

Unreal: Harry Reid Makes Up Romney Quote, Proceeds To Bash Him For It…

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has become the chief attack dog against his co-religionist Mitt Romney, but on Wednesday that attack went even further when his official Senate office released a statement that attributed a quote to Mr. Romney, even though he said the exact opposite. Mr. Reid’s release quoted the Republican presidential nominee’s staff as telling the Boston Globe that Mr. Romney would “not honor deportation exemptions” that President Obama has granted under his new non-deportation policy. But that phrase doesn’t appear in the Globe’s article. In fact, the newspaper said Mr. Romney’s staff specifically “said he would honor deportation exemptions issued by the Obama administration before his inauguration,” though the staffers said a Romney administration wouldn’t issue any new exemptions itself.

October Surprise: Unemployment Drops to 7.8% — But Skepticism Abounds by Jonathon M. Seid

  • Unemployment drops to 44-month low to 7.8%
  • However, many are questioning the numbers due to “contradictory data points” such as the total employment level soaring but the low net number
  • Government says 873K people found work — but reports only 114K new jobs were added
  • Former GE CEO alleged fraud, sending a tweet saying “these Chicago guys will do anything”
  • Popular finance blog Zero Hedge even called it a “pre-election ‘massaging’ farce”
In what will be one of the most influential jobs reports of the election season, unemployment fell from 8.1% to 7.8% in September, dropping below 8 percent for the first time in nearly four years. The private sector added 114,000 new jobs in September.  While another report will be released three days before the election, Friday‘s report is the one that will provide the bulk of material on the campaign trail during the election’s crucial final month.  The numbers, however, are perplexing to CNBC, which notes that there are some oddities:
  • The report presented a slew of contradictory data points, with the total employment level soaring despite the low net number.
  • The falling jobless rate had been a function as much of the continued shrinking in the labor force as it was an increase in new positions.
  • But the government said the total number of jobs employed surged by 873,000, the highest one-month jump in 29 years. The total of unemployed people tumbled by 456,000.
  • The labor force participation rate, which reflects those working as well as looking for work, edged higher to 63.6 percent but remained around 30-year lows. The total labor force grew by 418,000, possibly accounting for the relatively modest net level of job growth.
The most curious item not discussed is the Current Population Survey (CPS) that is a monthly survey of households conducted by the Bureau of Census for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It provides the body of data on the labor force, employment, unemployment, persons not in the labor force, hours of work, earnings, and other demographic and labor force characteristics. So, did they change their survey methods in any way that SUDDENLY changed the results?

Meet the Obama Donors at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)

At least two economists at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) have contributed to President Barack Obama’s campaign. Harley Frazis of Bethesda, MD, has contributed at least $2,000 to Obama and $9,000 to the Democratic National Committee over the last three election cycles. Stephen Phillips of Washington, D.C., has contributed at least $270 to Obama during the 2012 cycle. According to his LinkedIn profile, Phillips served as an economist at BLS between June 2009 and July 2012. Phillips was responsible for examining the impact of Obamacare on Healthcare North American Industry Classification System indices.

48% Know Someone Who’s Quit Looking for Work in Bad Job Market – Rasmussen

Forty-one percent (41%) think the job market is worse than it was this time last year, down slightly from the previous survey but only the second time this year that pessimism has climbed into the 40s. So much for the new (and doubted 7.8% jobs report).  Nearly half of America knows someone that is no longer being counted!!!
